I had been part of this VN's fandom since and only recently fell out of love with the fandom's complete saturation of man-children who can't seem to understand basic narrative threads.
However, I will attempt to avoid mentioning that further within this review. I will now start the review proper.
What can be said about this absolutely amazing horror experience? The way the creators use the VN format to effectively scare the player is damn genius and one of the reasons this story could never be told outside of that format. The set-up is simple: You are Chase Hunter. A otter who grew up in Echo and are coming back for spring break to do a school project and a chance to reunite with your childhood friends: Flynn, Carl, TJ, Jenna, and Leo. You get to Echo and everything seems fine for the first 2 days of your trip.
On Monday however, you and your friends go to a river near Lake Emma, the place where your friend, Sydney was found dead.
This sparks an argument between Flynn and the rest of you. After said argument is over, all but you and Carl have left the area and you must make a choice: Which one of your friends will you go after? This is where the route choice presents itself. And I must say, it is an excellent set-up. I will review each route individually and give my opinions on each.
Carl's route is the one I played first. Before I get into the nitty gritty of the route, I must mention how you begin his route. You sit down. That's it. You just click his name and sit down next to him. It's a very passive way to begin a route and matches Carl to a T. You see, Carl lives a very sedentary life.
He plays video games, eats, smokes weed, and sleeps. But beneath that exterior of laziness is a great character who I fell in love with. This route is the least scary to me. All that really happens is Carl and you start to hallucinate from town's effects on you.
But this is what leads to a major revelation about Carl's ancestor, James Hendricks I. I won't spoil more beyond that, but suffice it to say, Carl's route left an impression on me. This is my least favorite route out of all of them. Leo is a character I really don't like that much. But that is not the reason I don't like his route.
It does do things right at certain points. I will say that a certain character has given me nightmares on more than one occasion. And Leo's bad ending is one of the most chilling experiences I had with this game. Leo may be an awful person, but I still enjoyed his route. Fuck man. I don't even know where to start with this one. This is my second favorite route in the game. Solely for the emotional impact that the ending had on me. This is one of the only routes in the game that has a singular ending.
And it's a banger, lemme tell you. The main reason you would pick TJ's route is to comfort him after Flynn yelled at him. I should know, this is why I picked it! But the game skillfully turns this desire against you over the course of the route. Chase has a secret that he has kept hidden for years. And that secret is coming back to haunt him in this route. The bathroom scene is still one of the most terrifying moments in the game for me.
This route is so damn good, man. Flynn Moore. The black sheep of the Echo fandom. It would seem Flynn ignites rage in the majority of the fandom for simply having trauma. But that is neither here nor there. I shall simply say that Flynn's route is my favorite in the game. This route is the only one with overt sex scenes. I was surprised when I experienced this because I had thought Echo to be a mature game that knew senseless NSFW content ruined good stories. But I was proven wrong!
The sex scenes in this route serve the purpose of showing Flynn's main coping mechanism: Sex. Flynn was the closest in the group to Sydney before he died. Syd's death greatly effected him because of said closeness. However, he was never able to express his grief over his best friend because his other friends made him bury it deep down to avoid hurting TJ.
This lead to an embittered man with deep-seated issues that were never resolved. I love Flynn Moore. He is an extremely well-written character and his fate in both this route and TJ's left me feeling empty inside. I love this fucking route, OMG. This was the final route to be completed.
Therefore, it was the one I played the last. I really like this route. It tied a lot of stuff together. Jenna is a character who I personally dislike. She is a manipulative cunt who uses her traumatic family life as an excuse to talk down to all the other characters and I just found her to be insufferable.
However, playing this route changed my view on her. This route is the one that focuses that most on Tetanus Alley gang. Which means more info on Jenna's childhood. Very informative stuff here. This route also features the most pants-shittingly scary moments in the entire game for me. Oh yeah, and Brian is back. Really great route! I found Jenna's route to be the most unnatural feeling. Like you said she's manipulative and such. Her route did change my view of her somewhat and it does tie lots of things together and has the best ending.
But I still don't like Jenna very much. I would suggest to play Carl's route first and leave TJ and Flynn's route for the last, the rest of them, play at hearts content. Personally my favorite is Leo, Carl's and Flynn's route where very good too. Haven't finished the other characters yet. Girlboss Gaslight Gatekeep Each route is insanely great, with side characters just enhancing the story in a beneficial way.
Not a single character written poorly by any means. Me gusta. I can't believe there are no more updates to this game. It's honestly so great. I wish there were more : but after all, there has to be an end. It's been a bit since I played the game through in its entirety, but I remember taking a couple of weeks reading it for between hours a night. I would say there is at least 30 hours worth of reading material, though its probably close to 40 if you play all routes and try to get all the endings.
Going through one route though should take between hours, with subsequent playthroughs being shorter as you can skip over the first 2. How is it that each time I do a new route it makes me feel worse on the inside then the last one?
I'm going to have to find a new VN to cheer me up. If anyone has any good suggestions I'd love to hear them! I won't spoiler any from here, but i can promise its more upbeat than that still have some sad scenes, but not as much as Echo.
Jesus this is the best visual novel I've played to date and probably for long after , first entry into the horror side for me, and I may now have an addiction for the unknown. Man I loved Jenna's route. Sad its ended but lets hope we get to see the characters again in new releases!
Me playing Adastra was like: My feelings have been destroyed and I am now burning inside. I am not hurt. I am destroyed!! Flabbergasted by just how incredible this VN is. After playing though every route, I can say with certainty this is the best VN that I have ever played, and probably ever will.
That said, heed that content warning; this is not for everyone. If you could be potentially triggered by sensitive subjects, themes, or images, you must put your own health first and keep yourself away from this. It goes to some incredibly dark places.
With that in mind, I'd like to, without spoiling anything, convince you to play this if you feel capable of doing so. Firstly, I must sing the praises of the writing, as of course that is the crux of any good visual novel: the writing is stellar. Very minimal grammar mistakes and typos, firstly, and beyond that surface-level, there is so much depth behind the writing. This is paced beautifully. Within I'd say 15 minutes, this story had its hooks in me.
Its introduction has a way of feeding you just enough information to get your curiosity piqued, in probably the most natural way I've ever seen any VN do so. The narration feels very genuine, natural, like one's own inner monologue, and every new piece of info from the narrator is mentioned as if it's already understood, leaving you, the reader, with oodles of questions that spur you further into the narrative, seeking answers.
Then we have all of the characters Every single one is extremely well-rounded and expertly written. You can feel and understand every one of them, their actions and behaviors consistent with their own personalities and the situations they're put in at every moment, and each one, including those that are minor and seemingly inconsequential, are deeper than they first seem. You will fall in love with at least the main cast if you play through all routes, which you will need to in order to fully understand the underlying story, which brings me to my next point.
You're always moving in circles. This is the thematic center of this game You will have to return to the beginning, you will have to retrace your steps, you will have to move yourself and this world in circles if you want any chance at understanding it This album gurns and churns with the dense, atmospheric power of an angel wrestling the forces of hell. Wolfe's voice is an ethereal swirl, but it can cut like a blade.
Her guitar, meanwhile, is a reaper's scythe, and with it, she flails like a Balrog summoned deep and raging from the bowels of Middle Earth. It's an album of dreams and nightmares, a sludge-gaze torrent of painful questions hurled into the void.
A brave, bold and empowering listen. Michael Mueller. A wonderful place to be. A bit lonely, hazy, like the peak of a montain. Hard to pin down a favorite track on this one. Two Ghosts by Wayne Everett. The new album from L. Tallies by Tallies. This Toronto group's sound unabashedly hearkens back to the bouncy indiepop of the Darling Buds and the Primitives. Rage In Peace by Prince Rama.
